Bench Planes are the workhorses of the shop. We make all sizes that Stanley did from the tiny No. 1 to the huge No. 8. Each has its own charm but personal preference plays a large part in choosing the right bench plane for a particular job. A beginner needs two basic sizes - a smoothing plane (No. 4 or 4-1/2) and a Jointer (No. 7 or 8). A Jack Plane (usually a No. 5) would be the next most useful size.

The frog design is unique - a fully machined mating fit between the frog and the body. The design also allows precise and easy adjustments of the mouth opening from the rear without having to remove the cap and blade.

No. 4 1/2 Smoothing Plane

The Lie-Nielsen No. 4 1/2 Bench Plane is based on the Stanley Bedrock model. Bedrocks were the top of the line; heavier and better made than the standard. The frog design is unique; a fully machined mating fit between the frog and the body. The design also allows precise and easy adjustments of the mouth opening from the rear without having to remove the cap and blade.These features in addition to our A-2 cryogenically treated double-tempered Tool Steel blade make for a very solid tool that will give excellent results in the most demanding conditions.

Years ago Sargent made a small rabbeting block plane No. 507. It's a great design handy as a block plane and wider than most rabbet planes making it easy to trim tenons to fit. Blade bedded at 12°. Non-adjustable mouth 1¾" (4.44cm) overall width 6¼" (15.87cm) long unbreakable Ductile Iron body. Bronze cap 1/8" (3.17mm)thick blade body ground flat and square to .001" (.0254mm).

The WoodRiver Block Plane is based on the venerable Stanley #65 low angle and #18 standard angle Knuckle Cap design generally considered one of best block plane designs around. With the widely recognized comfortable chrome plated Knuckle Cap these block planes look like the standard and low angle versions of yester year. Upon closer inspection youll notice changes to the base castings which not only strengthen historically weak points of the original design but also improve the blade bedding area. Improved blade adjustment mechanisms allow for crisp easy adjustment of the blades using the rear adjustment knob. The adjustable mouth is very smooth to operate and allows fine tuning of the mouth for work ranging from coarse to creating whisper thin shavings. The stress relieved ductile iron castings are precision machined flat and square. Each plane is outfitted with a high carbon tool steel tool blade which is hardened to Rc60-64 for maximum edge retention and ground to a 25 degrees bevel. We recommend sharpening the blades prior to use however theyre impressively sharp right out of the box.

Wood Smooth Plane with 2" Hock Iron

This body of this wooden smooth plane is made form a single piece of white oak.

The plane is equiped with a 2 inches wide Hock High Carbon iron assembly. The iron has not been honed. Hone the blade before first use. A good quality honing jig is highly recommended. Do it slowly and enjoy the process.

The iron assembly is hold in place with a wooden wedge under a brass pin. Use a small hammer to adjust the depth of cut. Always start with the lightest cut as you can at the very begining. After a little practice you should be able to make paper like shavings with whisper sound.

As all wooden products please wait for a few weeks before tuning the plane body until the wood settles in your own shop. A light coat of wax can also help protect the plane body.

Low Angle Jack Plane

The Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Jack Plane is based on the Stanley 62. Ours is an outstanding plane. The low angle blade set with the bevel up (making this technically a block plane) was originally designed for end grain work. Our massive blade makes for very smooth cutting on end or long grain and figured woods. The blade is shipped with a 25° flat bevel. Using higher angles up to 40° gives excellent results on difficult grain. This can easily be done by honing a small secondary bevel at the higher angle. An extra blade on hand prepared this way is very handy.

The generous handle is hand-shaped for a comfortable grip. The soles are ground dead flat. Design and workmanship combine to make a tool that will be a pleasure to own and use every day for years to come.
